Charitable Involvement

Our office has chosen to give back to the community by becoming involved in the following ways:

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk

Or own Michelle Bagwell (Dr. Edwards’s assistant) got us involved in this. Her nephew was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at the age of 4. Michelle was so inspired by her nephew’s strength in battling this disease that she formed a group here in Forsyth County to participate in the annual Light the Night Walk. In 2011 our group raised over $10,000 to help fight bloodborne cancers. We’ll be sure to come back soon with the link to the group’s 2012 website.

Halloween Candy Buy-Back

2012 Update:
We will be accepting candy this year on Thursday, Nov. 1st and Friday, Nov. 2nd!

Most kids collect as much as 10 pounds of candy from trick-or-treating! This of course is not helpful when trying to combat cavities and childhood obesity, so every year during the week after Halloween, we collect candy from the kids and we even pay them $1 per pound of candy up to 5 pounds. We have partnered with Operation Gratitude to then ship the candy to our troops around the world so that they can have a little taste of home and know that they are not forgotten.

Free Oral Cancer Screenings during Oral Cancer Awareness Month (April)

April is Oral Cancer Awareness month. Every year nearly 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with this terrible group of diseases. Unfortunately the 5-year survival rate is only around 57%. Most of these cancers are discovered at a very late stage which is why the survival rate is so low. When detected early, most of the cancers in this group are very treatable. To assist in this effort, Dr. Edwards offers free oral cancer screenings every year during the month of April. Our 2ND Annual Free Oral Cancer Screening Event will be Monday, April 23, 2012. If you know someone who hasn’t been screened please have them contact our office to schedule a time during the event. It should only take about 10 minutes of their time.

School Talks

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is very true, so Dr. Edwards believes strongly in teaching children the importance of nutrition and taking care of their mouths so they can have a better chance of avoiding cavities and gum disease. Beyond the education component Dr. Edwards really has a fun time speaking to the kids and answering their questions. If you would like Dr. Edwards to speak to your class, please contact our office at 678-455-3734 to schedule a time.
